About Us
Sickle and Finch started out as a solo mission. The idea for a company specialising in thoughtfully designed flannel shirts grew out of an appreciation for the clothes in my own closet that have been staples for years. I’m known among my friends and family as something of a cheapskate – someone who will wear the same shirt or pair of boots to death, before buying a (more than likely identical) replacement.
It's not just about being economical, though, or valuing good quality gear over fast fashion (although I do). But don’t we all grow attached to our favourite clothes, and the memories they represent? The feeling of reaching for that one particular shirt and thinking of all the experiences I've had while wearing it – the cities I’ve walked, the foods I’ve eaten, the different landscapes I’ve looked out on and the people I’ve been with – that’s something I wanted to create for others.
Flannel is especially associated with a lot of good times, for me. It’s the fabric I associate with the outdoors – camping, motorcycling, adventures with friends (and pets), and going on bushwalks with my dad (check out The Frank, which is named for its similarity to one he used to wear when I was growing up). Flannel also always has me looking forward to the cooler months, but I wanted to be able to wear flannel shirts year-round, and I wanted to be able to wear them on all sorts of occasions – not just outdoor adventures – and still feel comfortable and stylish.
So the shirts I’ve designed come in a range of fabric weights and colourways that are suitable for cold weather and warm, and for a range of activities both outdoors and in. You can wear a Sickle and Finch shirt to the cinema, or the office, or the gym, or horseback riding, or roll it up and use it as a pillow while moto camping. And because we shouldn’t be the only ones looking and feeling good, I’ve also made a range of bandanas that you can wear yourself or gift to your favourite furry friend.
Thanks for joining me on this first leg of my journey – your support and enthusiasm mean I’ll be able to continue drawing on my experiences and your feedback to guide Sickle and Finch’s future.
And special shout-out to the friends and family who’ve pitched in to test run, model and photograph the shirts and get this whole thing up and running.
